Wer ist die Venus Italika von Canova?

Entworfen und ausgeführt von Antonio Canova (1757 - 1822).

Während der Regierungszeit von Napoleon Bonaparte wurde die berühmte Venus der Medici aus den Uffizien von den Franzosen konfisziert. Daraufhin beautragte der florentiner Stadtrat Canova mit einer Statue als Ersatz.

Als Resultat präsentierte er dem Stadtrat diese wundervolle Statue, die Venus Italica, heute im Palazzo Pitti, Florenz zu sehen.

Das Original ist ausgeführt in weissem Carraramarmor. Hier eine grössenreduzierte Ausformung der Kopfbüste.

Sculpted by the great Italian artist Antonio Canova (1757-1822). During the rule of Napoleon Bonaparte, the well known antique Venus de Medici was confiscated by the French from the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.

The Florentine authorities commissioned Canova to sculpt a replacement and he presented them with this beautiful rendition: Venus Italica, now in the Pitti Palace, Florence. Made from white Carrara marble.
